The Open Science Workspace for Collaborative Data-driven Discovery

CyVerse provides scientists with powerful platforms to handle huge datasets and complex analyses, thus enabling data-driven discovery. CyVerse’s extensible platforms provide data storage, bioinformatics tools, data visualization, interactive analyses, cloud services, APIs, and more. CyVerse was created in 2008 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and now supports over 100,000 researchers in 169 countries. CyVerse has appeared in more than 1,500 peer reviewed publications, trained over 40,000 researchers and instructors, and supports US$255 million in additional research funding by NSF. Led by the University of Arizona in partnership with the Texas Advanced Computing Center and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, CyVerse is a dynamic virtual organization that fulfills a broad mission to enable data-driven, collaborative research.

Pricing

Basic access is free to CyVerse’s data storage and computing resources. To scale up storage and compute resources to meet the scientific needs of your project, team, or research institution, CyVerse also offers several affordable subscription tiers. With a subscription, there is no need to maintain your own servers, pay for IT services, or worry about security and backups. CyVerse’s hardware, software, and staff enable you to easily store, manage, share, and analyze large amounts of data.

FAQs

The mission of CyVerse is to design, deploy, and expand cyberinfrastructure for research, and to train scientists in its use. Cyberinfrastructure (also known as CI or computational infrastructure) provides solutions to the challenges of large-scale computational science. Just as physical infrastructure, such as laboratories, makes it possible to collect data, the hardware, software, and people that comprise cyberinfrastructure make it possible to store, share, and analyze data. Using cyberinfrastructure, teams of researchers located anywhere in the world can attempt to answer questions that were previously unapproachable because the computational requirements were too large or too complex.

CyVerse was originally created by the National Science Foundation in 2008 with the name iPlant Collaborative to serve US plant science communities. From its inception, iPlant quickly grew into a mature organization, providing powerful resources and offering scientific and technical support services to researchers nationally and internationally. In 2015, iPlant was rebranded as CyVerse to emphasize an expanded mission to serve all life sciences, as our cyberinfrastructure is germane to all life sciences disciplines. By democratizing access to supercomputing capabilities, CyVerse provides a crucial resource to enable scientists to find solutions for the future.

External Collaborative Partnerships (ECP) pair member(s) of the CyVerse user community with expert CyVerse staff to address the computational needs of a scientific project. Requests are reviewed on an ongoing basis. The criteria CyVerse uses to review ECP requests are available on the CyVerse website.

Every member of a team or lab does not need a subscription. However, there are advantages to each collaborator having a subscription. Storage and analysis limits are enforced for individual accounts. If an individual holds all the data and runs all the analyses, that one person can buy a subscription. However, if all team members have subscriptions, then all members can make full use of all the features of their tier. Contact CyVerse for helping finding a solution that works best for you and your research.

If you exceed your limit, you will not be able to add new data (which may also affect running analyses that deposit new data into your account). If that happens, you can either delete data or subscribe to increase your data storage.
